Dawud al-Zahiri

Dawud bin Ali bin Khalaf al-Zahiri (815–883/4 CE)〔Taareekh at-Tashree’ al-Islaamee, pp. 181, 182〕 was a Muslim scholar of Islamic law during the Islamic Golden Age, specializing in the fields of Hermeneutics, Biographical evaluation, and historiography. He is widely regarded as the founder of the Zahiri school of thought,〔Joseph Schacht, (Dāwūd b. ʿAlī b. Khalaf ). Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition. Brill Online, 2013. Reference. 9 January 2013〕〔Mohammad Sharif Khan and Mohammad Anwar Saleem, ''Muslim Philosophy And Philosophers'', pg. 34. New Delhi: Ashish Publishing House, 1994.〕 the fifth school of thought followed by Sunnis Muslims to this day, though he never viewed himself as such, nor do the followers of the school.
He was a celebrated, if not controversial, figure during his time,〔Dr. Mohammad Omar Farooq, (The Riba-Interest Equivalence ), June 2006〕 being referred to in Muslim historical texts as "the scholar of the era."〔Al-Dhahabi, , v.13, Entry 55, pg.97-108〕
